We moved to Dallas about three months ago and if I tell you
it has been ‘absolutely fantastic’, I would be lying. Dallas is a nice city but I've had a few ‘I-miss-Chicago’ moments, especially when I went there last
month for my friend’s baby shower.
We live in a nice neighborhood with lots of bars,
restaurants and shops. Our apartment is pretty spacious too.
But the air conditioning has died on us thrice already and
the elevator hardly works. We've also seen people passed out in our hallway and
some pretty nasty elevator trash. So we've decided to stick around until our
lease expires and then move.
College was fun but I don’t need a weekly
reminder of what I’m missing.
Moving here however has changed my life. I've done one thing
that I would've never done had I stayed in Chicago. I've started running
outdoors because the weather is amazing.
Carnivore and I joined the Dallas Running Club’s marathon
training program in July and it has done wonders for my fitness and health. I've written about it in detail on Tanvi’s
blog.
We are running a half-marathon on Sunday and I did my first
Sprint Triathlon in October. I had such a blast doing it that I've already
decided to do the International distance next year. They don’t allow you to
wear iPods during triathlons so I was singing to myself while biking and
running. During the swim though, I was praying because when you swim in open
water with 200 people, you’re bound to get kicked and punched.
| My triathlon medal. It's an opener. |
Other than that, a few things that have been on my mind
lately are:
Gone Girl – I read
this book by Gillian Flynn when I was in Chicago. If you like a good page-turner
please read this. Even though the end was a bit disappointing, it doesn't take
away from the fact that 98% of the book is fantastic.
Lance Armstrong – I
believed he was guilty the day he decided not to fight the doping charges
against him. It has destroyed my faith in competitive sport, and you all know
how much I love sport. What do you think; guilty or framed?
Election – If you
live in America it is impossible to ignore election news. I can’t vote here but
I am following it keenly, mainly because the economic policies of both
candidates will affect us directly.
Bollywood – My
love for Hindi movies is as strong as ever. I thought English Vinglish was
fantastic and Student of the Year was a suspend-logic-and-have-a-blast kind of
movie. I’m now looking forward to Talaash.
To cut a long story short, the point of this post was to
say hello again and brag about finishing the shortest triathlon distance at a below average pace.
Glad you finally reSURFaced :D !! Moving out is the best part I read abt your apt - sorry abt that :( Good Luck with the marathon. I don't really share your passion for sport, but was wondering if and how LA would cough up all that cash he was asked to. And these days, I can't seem to end a post (or comment apparently) without GO OBAMA!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I need all the luck I can get for Sunday. Reg Armstrong, I really don't know how he's going to return the money if every sponsor asks him for it. If it's just one or two, I think he can manage. Either way, it was just shameful.
DeleteThat's awesome - congrats on your triathlon and good luck on your upcoming half-mara!
ReplyDeleteHoping Dallas starts to feel a bit more like home soon.
Thanks Sig. How have you been? I'm hoping the milder winters will make me like this city more :)
DeleteGlad to see you back, G!! Although you took a blogging hiatus, I love seeing your athletic progress on Facebook/Twitter...SO inspiring! Love that you added Bollywood to your list above! As you know, I seem to have totally embraced it the last few months...my love for VD is still strong as ever! Something that might amuse me: SOTY had to change the word "sexy" to "desi" in the song Radha as extremists said it's against the law to put a Hindu deity & the word "sexy" in the same context! Sadly the new version doesn't have the same ring to it!
ReplyDeleteKT I want to give you a big hug right now. I think you are one of the few people constantly encouraging me. Can't wait to see you! And don't get me started on the Radha song. How how how?
DeleteGlad you are back! SOO proud of all your achievements. You GO GIRL!

Thanks Tanvi; for all the inspiration and also for being a great friend.
DeleteOh, how I've missed you on here! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you're doing well in Dallas, despite the shady apartment. Yikes! I hope you two find a MUCH better place soon.
Good luck with all the running. I'm envious about your pleasant Texas weather. I can feel snow on the horizon in KC and it makes me wanna cry lol.
I'm so nervous about this election. :S
I've missed you too Jenny. You need to visit us soon. Skip all that snow in KC and come drink margaritas with us.
DeleteI'm nervous about the election too but I think Ohio will be the key.
Good luck with the Half Marathon, going by your performance in the triathlon, I am sure you will rock this one. If not for Dallas you would be snoozing hunkered down in the cold this Sun morning.
ReplyDeleteHaha yes, and sending you to get me pound cake at 11:55 pm :)
DeleteAny new city can take a while to get used to...I hope that things improve for you soon! Vomit...not so good.
ReplyDeleteA marathon! Congrats. I can't even imagine. :)
Thanks Ameena. Running has started giving me highs that previously only red wine could.
DeleteCongratulations on your triathlon! I am so looking forward to get into my running groove in a couple of months.
ReplyDeleteGood luck for your half marathon!!!!

PS: btw heard some good stuff about SOTY and now that you validated it too, i might give it a watch after all :)
Thanks Ashy. I am actually glad we're here through winter because I can't bear the thought of being in Chicago through sub zero temps.
DeleteAnd go watch SOTY. The songs are awesome.
Hey Gayatri welcome back... Nice to hear about your sporting activities best of luck for the upcoming Dallas run....
ReplyDeleteWelcome back and you came back with a "bang!".. Congrats on the marathon, my dear :)
ReplyDeleteps: adjusting takes time, and I'm sure you'll be able to eventually :)
okay now I'm very very upset- I wish I had read your blog a month ago- BECAUSE I was in DALLAS!! I would have loved to meet up with you. I'm sorry, but I did NOT enjoy Dallas- number one, my hubby and I arrived at 11.30 pm- rented a car and promptly got lost for 2 hours- when our hotel was only 20 minutes from the airport!!!! Some sort of roadworks were going on :( --- now if I had met up with you, that would have been a lovely treat and maybe my memories of Dallas would be a bit nicer.
